In gaming and gambling I've spent, among other things, 1.5 years on the front-end portal of an online casino gaming platform on Angular 2 / TypeScript with Vert.x as the API layer, and on a social gaming platform with developers distributed across the Netherlands, Spain, the UK, Canada, and the US. Two projects in which technology, money, regulation, and user experience had to line up tightly — no part could afford to slack off.
What characterizes this sector is that an average evening sees more concurrent users, transactions per second, and fraud attempts than many other systems see in an entire week. That constantly forces you to account for scale and latency, and for responsible play, age verification, and limit-setting that aren't bolt-on UI features but the frame within which everything is built.
Building an SPA for a platform like this is a different story than a typical SPA. Players expect an experience that comes as close as possible to a native app — instant reactions, smooth transitions, no unnecessary navigation between functional screens — while underneath there is continuous communication with payment providers, gaming providers, and internal systems for account, bonus, and history.
A large part of my work was in those integrations. A payment starts in the portal, is handled at an external provider, and must lead within seconds to an updated balance and a play experience without hiccups. Bonuses, free spins, and loyalty rules tie into exactly the same flows. One wrong assumption about order or timing and the whole play experience cracks.
On the social gaming platform with international teams the biggest lesson was the importance of very clear contracts between teams. When three parties simultaneously work on code that meets on one screen, a vague API agreement is a ticking time bomb. We invested a lot of time in formats, error scenarios, versions, and deprecation policies — and in tools to validate them.
At the same time, user experience matters intensely in this sector: the competition is always one click away. Fast load times, smooth animations, and a UI that also works on a second-tier Android device on a shaky 4G connection aren't extras — they're table stakes.
